The novel was self-published but became the best-selling USA Today, having sold a million copies since June 8, 2008. It was no. 1 seller of paper-selling fairy tales on the New York Times Best Seller list from June 2008 to early 2010, in partnership with Hachette Book Group USA's FaithWords (Hodder & Stoughton UK) Response In 2009 was awarded to “Diamond Award” for the sale of more than 10 million copies by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.

The title of the book is the metaphor of "the house you build because of your pain", as Young explains in a telephone interview. He also told radio program manager Drew Marshall that The Shack was "a metaphor for the places you find yourself.

Summary:

The novel is set in the American Northwest. The main character is Mackenzie Allen Phillips, the father of five called "Mac" by his family and friends. Four years before the main events of the story, Mac takes his three children on a camping trip to Lake Wallowa near Joseph, Oregon, stopping at the Mulnoma Fall on the way. Two of his children are playing in the canoe when he flutters and nearly drowns Mac's son. Mac is able to save his son by drowning in water and freeing him from the canoe webbing, but spontaneously leaves his youngest daughter, Missy, alone in his camp. After Mac returns, he sees Missy missing. The police are called, and the family learns that Missy has been kidnapped and murdered by a serial killer named "Little Ladykiller". The police found an abandoned hut in the forest, where Missy was taken: her blood-stained clothing has been found, but her body is not located. Mack's life, as he calls it, sinks into "The Great Sadness".

As the novel begins, Mac receives a note from "Papa" in his mailbox, stating that he wants to meet up with Mac who is coming to the hut the weekend. Mack is surprised by the note - he has not had an affair with his abusive father since he left home at the age of 13. He suspects that the note may belong to God, whom his wife Nan affectionately calls "Papa".

The bulk of the book tells of Mac's conversation with Papa, Jesus, and Saryu as he tells of Missy's death and her relationship with the three of them. Mac also has different experiences with each of them. Mac walks on a lake with Jesus, sees an image of his (earthly) father in heaven with Sarayu, and interacts with Sophia, the hallmark of God's wisdom. At the end of his journey, Mac goes on a journey with Papa, who now appears as a large Native American male, who shows him that Missy's body was left in a cave.

After spending the weekend in a hut, Mac escapes and is so impressed by his joyful thoughts that he is killed in a vehicle accident. During the recovery, he learns that he did not actually spend the weekend in the hut, but that his accident happened the same day he arrived at the hut. He leads the police to the cave that Papa had revealed, and they find Missy's body still lying there. With the help of forensic evidence discovered at the scene, Little Ladykiller was arrested and put on trial.
